Biographical / Historical
Sir Leonard David Gammans (1895-1957) began his colonial service in Malaya, 1920-1934. In the same period he was attached to the British Embassy, Tokyo, 1926-1928 and undertook an extensive tour of India, Europe and America to study the organisation of agriculture, 1930. In 1934 he lectured in the U.S.A. and Canada, and was Director and Secretary of the Land Settlement Association, 1934-1939. He worked for the Ministry of Information, 1938-1941 and was Conservative MP for Hornsey, Middlesex, 1941-1957. He was a member of the British Delegation to the Conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations in Canada, 1942 and the U.S.A., 1945. He was also a member of a Parliamentary delegation to the West Indies, 1944, Sarawak, 1946 and Ceylon, 1949. He served as Assistant Postmaster-General, 1951-1955 and was created baronet in 1955. In 1917 he married Ann Muriel Paul, who later served as MP for Hornsey in her own right, 1957-1966.
