Biographical / Historical
Alexander Hendras Sutherland (1753–1820) was a merchant. Alexander Hendras Sutherland and his wife Charlotte Sutherland formed a collection of historical prints and drawings.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Sutherland Collection, of which the manuscripts are part, was presented by Mrs. Charlotte Sutherland in 1837, and came to the Library in 1839.
Sutherland 43 was given by Mrs. Charlotte Sutherland in 1843.
X.1.35 was presented on Aug. 16, 1849.
MSS. Sutherland 51, 132-134, 133*-134* were transferred to the Ashmolean Museum, Jun 1950.
