Biographical / Historical

Robert Southey (1774-1843) was a poet, journalist and biographer (details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography). Grosvenor Charles Bedford was Chief Clerk of the Audit Office.

Custodial History

The correspondence was owned by Bedford's great-niece, Mrs Erskine, of Milton Lodge, Gillingham, Dorset.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The correspondence was bought at Sotheby's in 1932.
