Abstract
Draft of proposals for education in Ireland introduced in the Irish House of Commons by Thomas Orde-Powlett.
Biographical / Historical
Thomas Orde-Powlett (1746-1807), 1st Baron Bolton, was a politician. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1770, and MA in 1773. From Feb. 1784 to Nov. 1787 he served as chief secretary to the Duke of Rutland, lord-lieutenant of Ireland, and as a member of the privy council in Ireland. In 1787 Orde introduced into the Irish House of Commons, in a speech of three hours' length, an 'extremely comprehensive' scheme of education. See the Dictionary of National Biography for further details.
