Custodial History

This collection descended from Lady Louisa Stuart (1757-1851) to her niece Lady Anna Maria Dawson (d. 1866), and then, gathering further papers at each generation, from aunt to niece: Caroline Stuart Erskine, daughter of H.D. Erskine, Dean of Ripon; Alice Strong (Mrs Godfrey Clark); finally to her son W.D. Clark.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was given to the Library by W.D. Clark, 1954-1960.

  • Many of Lady Louisa Stuart's papers were printed by Mrs Godfrey Clark in Gleanings from an old portfolio (3 vols., privately printed, Edinburgh, 1896-1898).
