'La Sainte Evangile sélon Saint Mathieu'
'La Sainte Evangile sélon Saint Mathieu', apparently in some dialect of north-western France: the latter part of i. 2 is 'èt Jâcob fut péthe dé Juda èt d'ses fréthes': the middle of i. 16 is 'èt envyit tchiqu' uns à tué touots les êfants tch' étaient dans Bethlehem èt ses alentours.'
Both writing and paper are English: the latter has as watermarks Britannia (in oval under crown) and W T & C°. I suspect the dialect to belong to one of the Channel isles, preferably Jersey, as Dr. Bandinel, Bodley's Librarian from 1813 to 1860, was descended from a family long settled there.
