Custodial History
The collection was bought from the collection of William Selby Lowndes, of Whaddon Hall (having been in the possession of William Lowndes about 1716), by W.H. Gee, bookseller in Oxford, in 1887.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
In 1888 E.W.B. Nicholson, Bodley's Librarian, purchased the collection for £40 11s, and 'after offering them at the same price to the Treasury transferred the purchase' in 1889 to the Bodleian for the same sum.
