Descriptions of Ireland and of the lord deputy of Ireland's household, etc., 1584-8:

  1. Fol. 1. 'A Treaty[se?] of Irland, ' the beginning of a general account of the island, leaving off in the middle of a word and page: beg. 'The Realme of Irlande containethe': see art. 5.
  2. Fol. 2. 'A declaracion of the fiue speciall Provinces of Irelande ...', with a description, lists of gentry, etc., written in or after 1586.
  3. Fol. 9v. 'A briefe declarationn of the orders and forme of Government in Sir Jhon Perrottes howse, duringe the tyme he was Lo. Deputie of Irelande' (1584-8).
  4. Fol. 24v. '... Diuers & sundrye Presidentes drawn and collected by W. J. ...', secretary to sir John Perrot (possibly William Johnes): copies of documents (precedents) useful to a lord deputy of Ireland, with some names and dates (1570-84).
  5. Fol. 47. An account of Ireland and its condition by, or copied by, 'Sr E[dward?] W[aterhouse?]', Dec. 10, 1586 (beg. 'Ireland containethe in lengthe'), followed by a further special account of Ulster, Feb. 8, 1586/7, by, or copied by, the same. The hand seems to be the same as that of art. 1, and is less stiff and formal than that of the rest of the volume. After fol. 69 about 100 pages (probably blank) have been cut out.

Custodial History

'Thomas Wood' and 'Rychard Parkjns' wrote their names on the inner front cover in the first half of the 17th cent.: owned by 'Henry Cromwell' (ld. lieutenant of Ireland 1657-9, son of the Protector), who wrote a motto over his name: 'R. Myddelton Massey, S. R. S. 1714. Donum G. Fann Ramseyensis', i.e. of Ramsey in Huntingdonshire where the Cromwells had property.
