A Common Place Book of Edward Pudsey, containing extracts in verse and prose from English writers and translators (historians, dramatists, poets, etc.) of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, apparently written between 1600 and 1615: among the authors cited are the following (out of about thirty, besides anonymous pieces):
- Bacon, Francis, viscount St. Alban's (fols. 31, 64v)
- Chapman, George (fol. 41)
- Decker, Thomas (fols. 42v, 80)
- Harvey, Gabriel (fol. 22)
- Jonson, Ben (fol. 39v)
- Lilly, John (fol. 86v)
- Marston, John (foll. 40v, 41v)
- Middleton, Thomas (fols. 80, 86)
- Nash, Thomas (fol. 21)
- Shakespeare, William (fols. 41, 86v). These are stated to be the first known manuscript quotations from any of Shakespeare's Plays
- Sidney, sir Philip (fols. 1, 73)
- Tourneur, Cyril (fol. 80v)
On fol. 1r is 'Jesu esto mihi Jesus. Edward Pudsey's Booke', and '1600.' Entries on fol. 84 show that in 1615-6 the volume was owned by -- Bassett. Fols. 86-88 which had become detached from the MS. before the Bodleian bought it were presented on Nov. 22, 1889, by mr. Ernest E. Baker, see the correspondence at fols. 90-104.

Custodial History
Owned by Richard Savage (see two letters from him, Sept. 1889, at fol. 97) about 1887, when he published his Shakespearean Extracts.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
At the Neligan sale on Aug. 2, 1888 (lot 1098, but not a Neligan book), it was purchased by J. O. Halliwell Phillipps (see his note on fol. ii), at the sale of whose books on July 4, 1889 (lot 1257), it was bought by the Bodleian for £12.
