Comprises:

  1. (fol. 9). Twenty-three letters from Humphrey Wanley, nearly all to dr. George Hickes, 1696-1709, chiefly on Anglo-Saxon or personal subjects. As in art. 2, dr. Hickes is usually addressed as 'Mr Wood' till June, 1697, and as 'Mr Potter' from Oct. 1697 onwards.
  2. (fol. 46). Forty-two letters from Edward Thwaites, nearly all to dr. George Hickes, 1697-1703, chiefly on Anglo-Saxon subjects.
  3. (fol. 121). Six Oxford news-letters, 1687-1689, three of which are from dr. Arthur Charlett: they may all be to dr. Hickes.
  4. (fol. 128). Letter from William Stanley to dr. Hickes, May 26, 1715, about archbp. Sancroft not inviting the Prince of Orange to England in 1687, with Hickes's remarks on the affair.

Letters, mainly from Humphrey Wanley, Edward Thwaites, Arthur Charlett and William Stanley, written in 1696-1709.

Biographical / Historical

Humfrey Wanley (1672-1726) was a librarian and palaeographer.

Edward Thwaites (bap.1671-1711) was an Anglo-Saxon and Greek scholar.

Arthur Charlett (1655–1722) was a college head.

William Stanley (bap.1647-1731) was dean of St Asaph.

George Hickes (1642–1715) was a bishop of the nonjuring Church of England and antiquary.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Purchased from mr. H. Evans, of London (see his four letters at fol. 1), with four other letters in MS. Eng. hist. c. 3 on Sept. 15, Oct. 1, and in Dec. 1887, for £16: however (fol. 128 etc.) were bought from mr. H. Evans on Jan. 16, 1888, for 10s.
