Miscellaneous 17 th and 18th cent. letters and papers:

  1. Fls. 5, 35. Seven letters to Edmund Bohun, 1685-8, including (foll. 5, 35) four from dr. George Hickes: the letter at fol. 5 has been printed in the Eng. Hist. Rev. v, p. 759
  2. Fol. 14. Six letters addressed to sir Richard Bulstrode, British envoy at Brussels, 1678-87: the writers are Francis Gwyn (fol. 15), James Vernon (fol. 17), and William Shaw (fol. 21)
  3. Fol. 23. Miscellaneous papers, 1630-96, including copies of speeches delivered in Parliament by king Charles II, May, 1678 (fol. 28), and by sir Francis Winnington, March, 1679 (fol. 29)
  4. Fol. 36. Nine original letters from G[ilbert] Walmisley to George Duckett, 1711-15, and (fol. 52) from T[homas] Brocas to the same: also (fol. 54) modern transcripts of the said letters as well as of two from Walmisley (foll. 64, 72) of which the originals are wanting

Biographical / Historical

Edmund Bohun (1645-1699) was chief justice of Carolina. Sir Richard Bulstrode (1610-1711) was a diplomat.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Art. 4 was formerly in the possession of sir Thomas Phillipps. It was bought as lot 396 in the Phillipps sale, April, 1903, by mr. Chas. E. Doble, after whose death it was purchased from B. H. Blackwell, Oxford bookseller, by prof. C. H. Firth.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Prof. C. H. Firth presented this to the Bodleian, viz. artt. 1-3 on Jan. 1 and art. 4 on May 19, 1914. Two letters from the donor are at fols. 3 and 33.
