Biographical / Historical
The University Committee for Ornithology was established in May 1933 and consisted of the Vice-Chancellor, the Proctors, the Linacre Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy, the Sibthorpian Professor of Rural Economy, the Director of the Institute of Ornithology, a member of the Hebdomadal Council appointed by the Hebdomadal Council (J.F. Stenning), a member appointed by the British Ornithologists' Union (Rev. F.C.R. Jourdain), a member appointed by the Oxford Ornithological Society (H. Balfour), and two members appointed by the British Trust for Ornithology (Lord Scone and B.W. Tucker).
The function of the Committee was to 'establish and supervise generally an Institute of Ornithology, and in particular…takes steps to secure that its work [was] co-ordinated with that of the Departments of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy and of Rural Economy' ( Oxford University Gazette, No. 2029, Vol. LXIII, 6 April 1933, p. 428).
