  1. Fol. 1. A letter from sir William Morice to the earl of Clarendon, Apr. 28 [1662 or'64]
  2. Fol. 3. Part of a letter from Charles ii to the duke of Neuburg, in French, with seal, but date, signature, etc., lost
  3. Fol. 5. 'Mr. [William] Guthrie's Account of the MS.[S] of the Clarendon Collection in his Possession', which collection was bought from him for five guineas by dr. John Douglas, to whom Guthrie wrote this letter, and who endorses it (about 1760-70)

  1. Fols. 7-19. containing an early draft of the preface to the original (1702) edition of Clarendon's History of the Rebellion, with variations from the printed text: the preface, although unsigned, is known to be by Laurence Hyde, 1st earl of Rochester
  2. Fols. 20-3. Copy of a letter of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, c. 1674

Biographical / Historical

Sir William Morice (1602-1676) was secretary of state. Edward Hyde (1609-1674), 1st Earl of Clarendon, was Lord chancellor.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Bought at Christie's 3rd July 1906 (lots 82, 50, 63) and additions bought from mr. E. Williams, 37 Newtown Road, Hove, on Nov. 15, 1913 and 1920.
