Short pieces in verse and prose written by sir Robert Southwell when an undergraduate at Queen's college, Oxford:

  1. Some are serious (fols. 6-21)
  2. Several on the death of friends, as two on sir Spencer Compton, dated Sept. 18, 1656 (fols. 18, 20v), one on Thomas Hyde, commoner of Queen's (fol. 21), one on Selden (fol. 44), one on (John) Petty (fol. 57v), and one on -- Cornish, chorister of New college, Aug. 1655 (fol. 26 rev.)
  3. Others are epigrams, college exercises, and the like, as 'Carmina quæ composui ex quo primum in Oxoniam veni' (fol. 56)
  4. A character of a Drunkard (fol. 41), etc.
  5. At fol. 31 rev. is 'Motus Oxoniensis descriptio', two poems on an Oxford incident of March 2, 1654/65
  6. At fol. 24, verses on 'Dr. [John] Wilson and his lute at [William] Ellis his meeting, Dec. 31, [16]55.'
  7. The only clue to the writer's name is 'R. S.' on fol. 36v, but he was of Queen's college, and was no doubt (sir) R. Southwell, who was matriculated from there in June 1653
