  1. Fol. 5. extracts from Foxe's Book of Martyrs, 1583; Edw. Grimstone's History of Spain, 1612; the same author's History of the Netherlands, 1609, and his Inventory of France, 1607; sir Walter Raleigh's History of the World, 1614 (see fol. 4), and other works, arranged under such topics as 'Martirs and martirdome', 'appeales', 'antiquitas': an alphabetical index of the topics is given at fol. 3v
  2. Fols. 219, 399. theological extracts from stt. Jerome, Chrysostom and Bernard (see fol. 422v) in Latin, similarly arranged: an index of the topics is given at fol. 420: the first are Jesus Christus, senectus, episcopus: other theological notes occur on fol. 406
  3. Fol. 374. the like from Platina De vitis pontificum.

At fol. 413v is a 'noate of the [622] bookes which my brother Jhon Day [vicar of st. Mary the Virgin, Oxford, 1609-22] gaue unto my sonn Jhon Day': cp. fol. 424v. On fol. 425 the writer has entered the births of his children.

Reverend Lional Day (1570-1640) was a Church of England clergyman and fellow of Balliol college, Oxford.

Custodial History

'No. 35' and afterwards '26' in some collection. Came to 'sir Thos. Phillipps bart. ex dono Francisci Kyffin Lenthal arm., August, 1868', and was MS. 24043 in his library. Lot 431 in the Phillipps 1899 sale when it was bought by Henry Gray, bookseller.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Afterwards purchased by Joseph J. Green of Godwyn Lodge, Hastings, who sold it to the Bodleian, Feb. 15, 1913.

Bibliography

These genealogical entries have been printed by the vendor, mr. Joseph J. Green, in an article on 'The family of John Day, the printer of the Reformation' published in the Pedigree Register, vol. ii, p. 258. The MS. of that article, presented by the author, Feb. 21, 1913, with a letter from him, has been inserted at fol. 426.
