A common place book ('Liber A'), containing extracts from biblical, classical, and English authors, including:

  1. Shakespeare (fols. 355, 359, 375): at the second reference it is stated that a passage from Romeo and Juliet [II ii. 177-82] was quoted by [Nicholas] Richardson, of Magdalen college, in an Oxford University sermon preached in 1620 and 1621
  2. At fol. 6v is an index of writers quoted, and at fol. 611 a long index of subjects
  3. Also at fol. 647 is a list of 'Writers of the ... Vniuersity of Oxford since the beginning of Queene Elizabeths raigne.'

There are signs of a rather earlier and shorter common place book on theological and moral subjects at fols. 462v-506v, etc., with an imperfect index at fol. 1.

Abstract

A common place book ('Liber A'), containing extracts from biblical, classical, and English authors

Biographical / Historical

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was a dramatist.

Other Finding Aids

Falconer Madan, et al., A summary catalogue of western manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford which have not hitherto been catalogued in the Quarto series (7 vols. in 8 [vol. II in 2 parts], Oxford, 1895-1953; reprinted, with corrections in vols. I and VII, Munich, 1980), vol. VI, no. 32547

Custodial History

As this volume, like MS. Lat. miso. b. 6, was handed down at Brasenose from principal to principal, it is possible that it may be the work of dr. Samuel Radcliffe, principal from 1614 to 1648: the writer was certainly an Oxford man.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Presented by the principal of Brasenose on April 30, 1898.
