Abstract

Glass slides belonging to Lt.-Col. Richard Sydney Patrick Bates (1897-1961), army officer and ornithologist

Biographical / Historical

Lt.-Col. Richard Sydney Patrick Bates (1897-1961) spent his military career in India, including in the 9th Jat Regiment. He was a great lover of birds, and spent much of his leave time exploring the Indian countryside, particularly in Kashmir, and making notes on and photographing the bird-life. Bates joined the Bombay Natural History Society in 1921 and was made a life member in 1937, and he kept up his ornithological pursuits when he retired from the army and returned to England in 1947.
