Abstract
Decoy and ringing books from Orielton in Pembrokeshire, compiled by Colonel Saurin and H.A. Gilbert.
Biographical / Historical
The first known house at Orielton, in Pembrokeshire, was built by the Wyrriott family in c.1200. The house later passed to the Owen family estates, through marriage. In 1656, a new house was built by Hugh Owen, near the site of the present house, which is thought to have been built by Sir Arthur Owen in 1743. The estate was sold to Mark Saurin, in 1857, and then to Mackworth Praed in c.1900, who probably built the decoy lake in front of the house in c.1919, used for shooting, and then bird ringing and other ornithological research. In 1938 the estate was sold to Arthur and Alice Gaddum, and requisitioned by the RAF during the Second World War. The estate was bought by Ronald Mathias Lockley in 1954. Whilst at Orielton, Lockley carried out research into the causes of myxomatosis in rabbits, as well as research into many other species. The Field Studies Council bought the Orielton estate from Lockley in 1963.
