Custodial History

Manuscript 601 acquired by the Bodleian Library

Once, like MS. Auct. E. 1. 6, owned by Henry viii, whose arms are on fol. 1: by the same scribe as MS. Auct. F. 4. 12. Till A.D. 1599 it was apparently no. 98 among the New College MSS. At the Act of that year it was purloined by a visitor ('Deus nouit plagium, vlciscatur hominem' says dr. Thomas James, in the Ecloga Oxonio-Cantabrigiensis, 1600, p. 4).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

In 1608 sir Thomas Bodley writes in the volume 'Donum Magistri Thomæ Alani Aulæ Glocestr. Oxon.', see Reliquiæ Bodleianæ, p. 232.

Physical Facet

Contemporary English (?) binding, silk brocade, faded, rebacked, silver-gilt clasp-fittings, clasps lost, painted gilt edges.
