The 'Wyburd manuscript' of poems, mainly by Thomas Carew
The 'Wyburd manuscript' of poems, mainly by Thomas Carew, with (fols. 50-5v, 59-61v) 'Paradoxes and Problems' by John Donne, c.1630-40. It represents sources independent of those used in Carew's Poems (London, 1640) and Donne's Juvenilia (London, 1633).
The manuscript is not entirely accurate, and is now incomplete, having lost at least 15 leaves. It was used by W. Carew Hazlitt for his edition of Poems of Thomas Carew (London, 1870), where it is described on pp. xv-xvi, and by R. Dunlop, for his edition of Poems of Thomas Carew (Oxford, 1949), where there is a description on p. lxix.
All the poems (fols. 1-37, 40-9v, 56-9) are reproduced, reduced in size, in Thomas Carew, Poems 1640, Scolar Press facsimile (Menston, 1969). An examination of the text of Donne's 'Paradoxes and Problems', by E.M. Simpson, is in Review of English Studies, 3 (1927), 129-45. Verse in Crum.
