Biographical / Historical

Geoffrey Emett Blackman, FRS (1903-1980), was an agricultural scientist. He attended St John's College, Cambridge. His father, considering his performance in Cambridge poor, encouraged him to go into industry. In 1927 he started as Head of Botany Section at Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).

In 1933 he moved to Imperial College, London, as Lecturer in Ecology in the Department of Botany. In 1945 he was appointed Sibthorpian Professor of Rural Economy at Oxford University.

Blackman's primary research was in weed control, toxicity, and herbicide techniques, but made frequent forays into other aspects of agricultural science. He died in 1980.
