Biographical / Historical
Sir James Augustus Henry Murray (1837-1915), lexicographer, was editor of The Oxford English Dictionary from 1879 until his death. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The majority of the papers (MSS. Murray 1-38) were donated to the Bodleian in 1994 by Katherine M. Elisabeth Murray (1909-1998), granddaughter of Sir James A.H. Murray. In 2017 Professor Oswyn Murray (b. 1937), great-grandson of Sir James A.H. Murray, donated some additional family papers (MSS. Murray 39-42).
