A small collection of material relating to the composer George Butterworth and his father Sir Alexander Kaye Butterworth, comprising photographs, correspondence between members of the Butterworth family and letters from Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir Hubert Parry, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Edmund Blunden and others. Letters marked with an asterisk include typescript transcriptions and notes provided by Anthony Murphy, biographer of George Butterworth ( Banks of green willow: the life and times of George Butterworth, 2012). Letters marked with two asterisks include notes (no transcriptions) also by Anthony Murphy. Apart from correspondence, other manuscript material and some printed items are also present.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated by Anthea Ionides, May 2015. Some additional letters were received subsequently (31/8/18) via Anthony Murphy. These included another letter from Vaughan Williams and a group of letters from Edmund Blunden to Lady Butterworth and her daughter Dorothea Mavor.
