Biographical / Historical
George William Frederick Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon of the second creation (1800-70) was ambassador at Madrid, 1833-9, Lord Privy Seal, 1839-41, President of the Board of Trade, 1846, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 1847-52, Foreign Secretary, 1853-8, 1865-6, 1868-70 and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1864. Sir Thomas Villiers Lister (1832-1902) was a nephew of the 4th Earl of Clarendon. He entered the Foreign Office in 1853, and was Private Secretary to Lord Clarendon. He was attached to special missions to Vienna, 1855; to Paris, 1856; to Russia, 1856; and to Lord Clarendon's special embassy to Prussia, 1861. He was Assistant Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1873-94. For more details see Who Was Who.
