Abstract

Archive of the Dashwood Family of West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire (1626-1904).

Biographical / Historical

The Dashwood family, of West Wycombe, Bucksinghamshire (1300 - 1927).

Arrangement

The collection is now arranged by successive heads of the family; but it contains two groups of papers not strictly of the Dashwood family. The presence of papers of the family of John, 7th Earl of Westmorland, is explained by the fact that Lady Mary Fane, daughter of Vere, 4th Earl of Westmorland was the second wife of the 1st baronet, and through her the 2nd baronet inherited the barony of le Despencer on the death of the 7th Earl in 1762. The connection of the Sandys family with the Dashwoods is through the King family of which the mother of the 3rd baronet and Anna Maria, Lady Sandys, were members.

The former system of arrangement was by box, and several documents from the collection have been cited in print by these old shelfmarks. The printed references have, where possible, been noted in this list. A concordance of old and new references is available.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Deposited in 1950, 1952 and succeeding years.

Separated Materials

In 1952 most of the deeds and records of estate administration were transferred to Buckinghamshire County Record Office (see Bucks C.R.O. List of Dashwood MSS.). In the course of relisting for this 1964 catalogue some further estate material came to light which was transferred to Buckinghamshire County Record Office. The material relating to Lincolnshire has been calendared in detail by the Lincolnshire Archives Office (see Lincs Archives Office List no. MCD/429).
