Abstract

Philip Isaacson's collection of Gehenna Press ephemera, together with Gehenna Press-related correspondence.

Biographical / Historical

Philip Isaacson (1924-2013) was a Harvard educated lawyer, art critic and collector, writer and newspaper columnist based in Maine in the United States. He was a friend of the American sculptor, print maker and publisher Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) and collected numerous works from Baskin's imprint Gehenna Press, as well as privately commissioning printed ephemera from the press. This small collection of that ephemera, including birth, wedding and bar mitzvah invitations, catalogues of Baskin/Gehenna Press exhibitions, as well as correspondence with the Baskin family, forms part of a larger collection of 64 works from Leonard Baskin’s Gehenna and Eremite Presses which can now be found in the printed book collections of the Bodleian Library (some of which also contain ephemera or archival items (e.g. bills) that have been left in situ). A further batch of ephemera is now stored with the Bodleian's John Johnson Collection of Printed Ephemera.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Acquired via Kenneth Shure, 6 Oct 2017.
