These six journals were written retrospectively, mostly in 1878, from contemporary notes kept by Giles. Each journal includes original letters to Giles which have been pasted in, as well as transcripts of letters to and from Giles. Each letter has been numbered by Giles. The letters are printed in The Diary. Each journal also contains a large number of newscuttings, autographs, photographs (many in MSS. Eng. b. 2101-2), drawings (mainly topographical, and mainly in MS. Eng. b. 2098), and printed ephemera, pasted into it.
