Abstract

A manuscript fair copy of an educational tool which seems to have been eventually published as Tome I of Saint-Ouen's Tableaux historiques des peuples modernes européans, composés de médaillons, etc, accompagné d'un text explicatif (Paris: J. Carez, 1825). Here it accompanies a set of plates used for the publication.

Biographical / Historical

Laure de Saint-Ouen was born in Lyon in 1779. She later become a noted French pedagogue. The subject of history was not on the school curriculum in France at the time, so she undertook to popularise its study. She became an author of historical textbooks. The first, Tableaux mnémoniques de l'histoire de France, was published in 1822, followed by history of England, religions and ancient Rome. Her mnemonic method was seen as innovative and effective, so she planned to expand it to also present the history of Germany, Russia and Spain, but her untimely death prevented her from completing the project. Some sources specify the year of her death as 1838 and some as 1850.
