Letters to Sir John Bowring including from Washington Irving, Thomas Perronet Thompson, Louis McLane (American ambassador to the United Kingdom), Jeremy Bentham, Allan Cunningham (Scottish poet), Albany Fonblanque, George Villiers (4th earl of Clarendon), William Howitt, Hercultes Robinson, William Pengelly and Stafford Northcote. There is also one letter to Jeremy Bentham from Albany Fonblanque, Jan 1829, and letters written after Bowring's death possibly to one of his daughters.

Biographical / Historical

Sir John Bowring (1792-1872) was a politician, diplomatist and writer. He spoke several European languages, travelled in Europe and was political editor of the Westminster Review. He was a Member of Parliament in the 1830s and 1840s and served as Governor of Hong Kong from 1854 to 1859. For further information see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
