The author is unidentified but internal evidence suggests that he was an American who was well-travelled in Europe although he had not visited for many years. He was travelling alone and his chief interests were historic sites, art galleries and places of picturesque beauty. He visited the following places:

  1. (fols. 3-4) Ireland, including Kinsale, Killarney, Cork and Dublin
  2. fols. 4-6) England, including Liverpool, Manchester, Birmingham, Warwick Castle, Kenilworth Castle, Blenheim Palace, Oxford and London
  3. (fol. 6) the Netherlands, including Rotterdam and The Hague
  4. (fol. 7) Belgium, including Brussels, Poperinge, Ghent and Antwerp
  5. (fols. 8-9) Germany, including Aachen, Cologne, Mainz, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Heidelburg and Karlsruhe
  6. (fols. 10-18) Switzerland, including Freiburg, Basle, Berne, Vevey, Geneva, Chamonix, Thun, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Meiringen, Brienz, Lucerne, Zurich, Schaffhausen and Stein – references to armed conflict relate to the Regeneration in Switzerland
  7. (fols. 19-21) Germany, including Munich, Nuremburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Aachen
  8. (fol. 21) Belgium, including Liege, Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent
  9. (fols. 22-23r) France, including Paris and a journey to the south of France, embarking at Marseilles for Genoa
  10. (fols. 23v-55r) Italy, including Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples and Capri
  11. (fols. 55r-57v) France, ending in Paris
