The author is unidentified but internal evidence suggests that he was an American who was well-travelled in Europe although he had not visited for many years. He was travelling alone and his chief interests were historic sites, art galleries and places of picturesque beauty. He visited the following places:

(fols. 8-9) Germany, including Aachen, Cologne, Mainz, Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Heidelburg and Karlsruhe
(fols. 10-18) Switzerland, including Freiburg, Basle, Berne, Vevey, Geneva, Chamonix, Thun, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Meiringen, Brienz, Lucerne, Zurich, Schaffhausen and Stein – references to armed conflict relate to the Regeneration in Switzerland
(fols. 19-21) Germany, including Munich, Nuremburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and Aachen
