Charles Eastland de Michele (1810-98) was an editor of the Morning Post from c.1834 to c.1844, and British consul at St. Petersburg from 1849 to 1854 and again from 1856 to 1866.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The bulk of the papers was bequeathed, with MS. Photogr. b. 1, fol. 8, and galley-proofs of articles for the Morning Post,'Table talk' by [William Johnston(e)] (transferred to the Department of Printed Books) by Beatrice Isabella Dorothy Thorburn, great grand-daughter of de Michele, 1984. MSS. Eng. lett. c. 678, c. 681, and some miscellaneous papers, all part of the original collection, were bought from Alicia Boyle and Patricia Hutchins, 1985.
