'A deliberation about the Execution of Justice uppon HR' with miscellaneous papers from the Interregnum and Restoration periods
Single Item
MS. Eng. c. 6075
Held at the Weston Library
Comprises:
- (fols. 1-8) legal arguments for and (fols. 5-8) against the execution Charles I, probably written in January 1649. The document is written in the same hand throughout; the authors of the arguments are not named, though the argument for sparing the king is apparently composed by a senior officer in the army, as he states (fol. 7v) 'I who in armes have not putt a price on my life to oppose the King everywhere...'. The conclusion is that the king should be spared, the document ending with the words 'for these reasons therfore, my vote is, Vivat Rex'. For further details see Bodleian Library Record, Vol. 16 no. 4 (October 1998), pp. 351-2.
- (fols. 9-10) draft commission for the appointment of a deputy gamekeeper for the Lord Protector's game twenty miles about Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, 26 Feb. 1655
- (fol. 11) list of ciphers, n.d. [probably between Dec. 1659 and Jan. 1660] using a two-letter code, endorsed with a note on how to interpret numbers for money and for men in a ciphered document, and with directions that the list is to be left with 'Mr Walker att a drapers att the head & sword in paules church yeard'. The list of names suggests that the document relates to correspondence concerning General George Monck, the restoration of the Rump Parliament, and the return of the secluded members.
- (fol. 12) list of twenty-eight names, n.d. [c.1661], the first nine noted as 'members', apparently MPs returned to the ' Cavalier Parliament' of 1661 for Norfolk constituencies. The remaining names appear to be members of the Norfolk gentry. 'Sr Justinian Lewing' has been added to the list (Sir Justinian Lewin was knighted in May 1661).
