Biographical / Historical
Nevill Coghill (1899-1980) was a Fellow and Tutor of English Literature at Exeter College, Oxford, 1924-1957, and Merton Professor of English Literature at Oxford from 1957 until his retirement in 1966. He was also an amateur theatre director, who directed the Oxford University Dramatic Society's open-air productions. For further details see the Dictionary of National Biography.
David Luke (1921-2005) was Tutor in German at Christ Church, Oxford from 1959 until his retirement in 1988. He was also a renowned translator of German literary classics into English. He was a close friend of Coghill and of W.H. Auden. For further details see the Dictionary of National Biography.
