The memoirs include a description of the detention of Alice Lenshina and her family at Mumbwa in August 1964 following the Lumpa Church uprising.

Abstract
Tony Noel's memoirs of Northern Rhodesia.
Biographical / Historical
Anthony John Ransted Noel (Tony Noel) was born in London in 1937 and educated at Highgate School. During National Service he was commissioned to the Queen's Own Nigeria Regiment and stationed at Abeokuta in charge of motor transport.
In 1958 Noel joined Her Majesty's Overseas Civil Service (HMOCS) and was posted as a district assistant to Katete in the Eastern Province of Northern Rhodesia and later to Chadiza on the Nyasaland border. On promotion to district officer in 1960 he spent one year at Bancroft on the Copperbelt and then transferred to Solwezi in North Western Province. Noel was posted to Mumbwa as district commissioner in 1964 and left HMOCS at the end of 1965.
On returning to England Noel joined J. Sainsbury plc, becoming regional personnel manager.
