Abstract
Photograph of a painting of Cecil Rhodes by Mortimer Menpes.
Biographical / Historical
Mortimer Luddington Menpes was born in Australia in 1855 and moved to England in 1875, studying at the National Art Training School in London. He was influenced by James McNeill Whistler and exhibited etchings and paintings at the Royal Academy. In 1900 he travelled to South Africa as war artist for the periodical Black and White. He published several books and died in 1938.

The photograph was given by Cecil Rhodes' niece, Georgia, to Rhodes trustee, Marmaduke Hussey, in the 1970s.
