Abstract

Letters from Drs Ronald and Pauline Ingle, medical missionaries in South Africa

Biographical / Historical

Pauline Marshall was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 1915. Following the death of her father, Pauline and her mother moved to England and in 1942 she qualified from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine. She acquired experience of operative surgery at the North Staffs Royal Infirmary and returned to South Africa in 1949 to work in mission hospitals. She worked first at Holy Cross Hospital and then St Margaret's Hospital, Clydesdale, and in 1954 moved to All Saints Hospital, Ngcobo.

Ronald Ingle was born in 1927 in China where his father was working as a surgeon. He qualified in medicine in 1952 via King's College, Cambridge, and King's College Hospital in London. After five years in the RAF Medical Division he joined the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) missionary organisation and was sent to All Saints Hospital, Ngcobo, in August 1958.

Pauline and Ronald married in 1960 and continued to work at All Saints Hospital until 1976 when Pauline retired. Ronald held posts in the Departments of Health in Transkei and East London and at the Medical University of South Africa until retiring in 1992. Pauline died in 1999.
