The letter was written in response to Miss Monro's grief following the death of her father. Beddows suggested that she read The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis, or even visit him at his college in Oxford. She did write to C.S. Lewis and his reply (with a note by Miss Monro) can be found at MS. Eng. c. 7963, fols. 25-26.
