This is a collection of mainly 18th- and 19th-century family papers. The main groups are:

  1. Letters to Charles Townshend (1725-1767)
  2. Papers of Lord Macartney, with some papers of Lady Macartney
  3. Papers of Lady Louisa Stuart
  4. Papers of Lady Louisa Davenport Bromley, and of Lady Anna Maria Dawson, lady-in-waiting to the Duchess of Kent
  5. Erskine papers, mainly correspondence of H.D. Erskine, Dean of Ripon, and of his daughter, Caroline Stuart Erskine
  6. Strong papers, which came into the collection presumably after the marriage of Fanny Louisa Erskine, daughter of the Dean of Ripon, to H.L. Strong, including papers concerning the supply of pay and provisions to the garrison of Minorca, 1763-1773, and letters from C.W. Strong to his sister Fanny, mainly from the Crimea, 1852-1855

Custodial History

This collection descended from Lady Louisa Stuart (1757-1851) to her niece Lady Anna Maria Dawson (d. 1866), and then, gathering further papers at each generation, from aunt to niece: Caroline Stuart Erskine, daughter of H.D. Erskine, Dean of Ripon; Alice Strong (Mrs Godfrey Clark); finally to her son W.D. Clark.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was given to the Library by W.D. Clark, 1954-1960.

  • Many of Lady Louisa Stuart's papers were printed by Mrs Godfrey Clark in Gleanings from an old portfolio (3 vols., privately printed, Edinburgh, 1896-1898).
