'The Comet' school magazine, Ernest Bailey Grammar School, Matlock
A homemade magazine titled The Comet, '(because it is so bright and beautiful, and appears so seldom)' handwritten and illustrated in a school exercise book. A contents page gives the names of the contributors as S. Bawcutt, G. Bawcutt, and J. Wheeldon. Fol. 1 is inscribed in an adult hand [by S. Bawcutt in later life?] ‘APPROX. 1942-3 1941? / SYLVIA BAWCUTT [AGE 13] / ERNEST BAILEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL / MATLOCK. DERBYSHIRE’. Fol. 31 verso is ascribed to Roger Bawcutt. Folios 49-52 are picture postcards, originally loosely inserted inside the embossed, faux-snakeskin paper wrapper in which the exercise book is bound. Two printed sketches of Christmas puppies have been pasted onto the front paper cover, with the handwritten caption ‘OUR MASCOTS’.
