Abstract

Account by Thomas Peckham detailing the disclosure of the Rye House Plot by Josiah Keeling to Secretary of State, Sir Leoline Jenkins, in the presence of Lord Dartmouth at Hampton Court

Biographical / Historical

Josiah Keeling (fl. 1679-1691) was an oilman from East Smithfield, London, and involved with coalworks in Warwickshire. He became involved in the Rye House Plot to assassinate Charles II and the Duke of York in 1683. However, he became anxious about the plan, and eventually disclosed the plot to Sir Leoline Jenkins on 12 June 1683. Thomas Peckham was rewarded £200 and John Graham, a servant of Lord Dartmouth's, was given £100 in 'gratious thanks for the[ir] good service… to the King and Kingdome' (fol. 10), for persuading Keeling to confess the Rye House Plot. Further details for Josiah Keeling and the Rye House Plotters are in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.
