Abstract

Account book of Mary Gofton, 1645-1649.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Gofton (c.1601-1686) was the daughter of Sir John Hanbury of Kelmarsh (Northamptonshire) and London, merchant (d. 1639). She married Sir Miles Sandys of Miserden, Gloucestershire, 30 Nov. 1622 at St. Bartholomew the Less, London. They had two sons, William and Edward, and a daughter Mary, who married Sir Nicholas Steward alias Stuart (1617-1710), 1st Baronet of Hartley Mauduit, Hampshire, in 1641. She married secondly Thomas Richardson in 1642, who appears to have died shortly afterwards. In February 1647 she married John Gofton, again in St. Bartholomew. She died in 1686 (information from online International Genealogical Index). There are several references to these family members in the accounts, including payments for presents to her grandchildren, and (fol. 17) payments towards the composition fine for her son Edward ('Ned') Sandys.
