Biographical / Historical

W. H. Reeve was born in 1906 and educated at Ossett Grammar School, and the University of Leeds. He spent much of 1935 to 1943 working as an assistant field geologist in Tanganyika (from 1935) and Nyasaland (from 1943), except for a period during 1940 to 1943 when he was on military service. In 1943, he joined the public works department in Kenya as an engineer-geologist; he became senior engineer-geologist in 1949. Reeve transferred to Northern Rhodesia in 1951 as chief geologist in the department of labour and mines; the following year he was appointed director of a geological survey (1952-1961).
