Biographical / Historical
Professor Swedi A. Mwankemwa (b 1928), originally from Dar es Salaam, studied medicine at Makerere University, Uganda, then began his internship at Sewa Haji Hospital in 1957. He worked subsequently in Moshi, Kibongoto, Muhimbili (as Surgical Registrar), then Morogoro as a provincial medical officer after Tanganyika's independence. In 1964 he joined the Ministry of Manpower Training and was appointed Medical Superintendent of Bugando Hospital in 1973. He was Deputy Director of the Muhimbili Medical Centre, 1976-1980 and Director-General, 1980-1983. Retiring from the Civil Service in 1983, he opened his own clinic in 1986.
