Biographical / Historical
Sir William Northrup McMillan, Kt (1918), was born in 1872 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. After working as a rancher in New Mexico (1890-1893) he became a businessman, working in both St. Louis (1893-1898) and in London, England (1898-1901). In 1901 he moved to Africa where he worked as an explorer and bigĀgame hunter (1901-1905) and as a rancher in British East Africa (1905).
McMillan was associated with a number of organisations and societies. He was a corresponding member of the Zoological Society, an honorary member of the Legislative Council of British East Africa, Captain of the 25th (Service) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers (Frontiersmen), and a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Sir McMillan died in 1925.
