Biographical / Historical
The papers largely concern Sydney Haldane, Baron Olivier (1859-1943), KCMG (1907). Lord Olivier graduated from Corpus Christi College, Oxford and entered the Colonial Office, 1882. He was Colonial Secretary, Jamaica, 1900-1904 and Governor, 1907-1913. He was Permanent Secretary, Board of Agriculture, 1913-1917, Assistant Comptroller and Auditor of the Exchequer, 1917-1920, and Secretary for India, 1924. He was a champion of the sugar industry in the British West Indies, and Secretary of the Fabian Society, 1886-1889. His publications include The Anatomy of African Misery (London, L. & V. Woolf, 1927).
