- Description of the period 1900-November 1901 including the Ashanti, and April 1902-April 1903 in the Gold Coast, with part of a diary concerning a visit to Southern Nigeria in June 1913

Biographical / Historical
Captain Herbert John Collett Leland (1873-1931), DSO (1900), entered the 5th Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers, 1890, served with the Gold Coast Constabulary, 1896-1900, and received a direct commission into the Royal Munster Fusiliers, 1900. He served as Captain and Adjutant, Gold Coast Regiment, West African Frontier Force, 1900-1903, Adjutant, 5th Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers, 1904-1909, and was promoted into the 1st South Staffordshire Regiment, 1909. He served in the British Expeditionary Force, France, 1916-1918, and retired in 1920. In 1902 he married Lena Duncan, with whom he had one son and two daughters.

The memoirs were donated by Captain Leland's daughter, through the good offices of A.C. Russell, on 12th March 1997.
