Biographical / Historical
Trevor Huddleston (1913-1998) was educated at Oxford University and was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1939, being posted to South Africa two years later to work in the slums near Johannesburg. From the beginning he campaigned against local poverty, apartheid laws, etc., becoming a lifelong friend of various African National Congress leaders in the process. His resistance against the National party's attempts to destroy the multiracial Johannesburg suburb of Sophiatown earned him the ANC's highest award, the Isithwalandwe, in 1955. He was the author of the influential book, Naught for your comfort (London; Collins; 1956), though he was recalled in the same year by his superiors, who feared his expulsion. He was appointed Bishop of Masasi, Tanzania, in 1960, then Bishop of Stepney, London, eight years later, where he opposed the actions of the National Front regarding Indian immigrants. In 1978 he was appointed Bishop of Mauritius and Primate of the Indian Ocean until his retirement five years later. After retirement, he devoted himself to his South African 'interests'. He was a founder of Britain's Anti-Apartheid Movement and its President, 1981-1994, as well as Chairman of the Defence Aid Fund for South Africa. In 1982 he received the United Nations Gold Medal Award and was given a tumultuous welcome by black South Africans when he returned to Johannesburg in June 1991. He was knighted in 1998 for his work against apartheid.
