Biographical / Historical
In 1979 the Gambia was ruled by Sir Dawda K. Jawara's People's Progressive Party. Dr. Jawara had come to power as Prime Minister after independence in 1965 and been elected President twice (1972 and 1977) after a referendum voted the country a republic in 1970. A declining economy and disaffection amongst the military led to an abortive coup in 1981, and Jawara's eventual deposition, again by the military, in 1994 after the short-lived military and economic confederation of Senegambia in the 1980s.
