Manuscript text in a W.H. Smith ruled A5 notebook with a red hardback cover. Inscribed on the front free endpaper 'This is the notebook for 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin', which I have given as a keepsake to my beloved friend, Katy Emck, in January 1999.'

In the notebook, Bernières records notes from books such as Richard Clogg's A Concise History of Greece, Mario Cervi's The Hollow Legions and Evan John's Time Under Earthquake: an adventure among Greek islands in August, 1953, some of which are acknowledged in the bibliography at the end of the novel. The notebook also includes lists of ideas (at the beginning and end of the notebook), lines to use in the book, 'Greek names', 'GK. [Greek] proverbs', 'Homeric phrases' and (near the end of the notebook) 'Things saved from the house'.
