Abstract
Papers of the Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and of the Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe (FROLIZI), 1970-1973.
Biographical / Historical
The Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) was founded in December 1961 to campaign for majority rule in Rhodesia. ZAPU was banned by the Rhodesian government in 1962 and many of its leaders were subsequently jailed or detained. It reorganised in Lusaka, Zambia, and engaged in armed conflict with the Rhodesian government forces.
The Front for the Liberation of Zimbabwe (FROLIZI) was founded in October 1971 by dissident members of ZAPU and the Zimbabwe AFrcian National Union (ZANU). It initially obtained significant outside support but collapsed in 1973.
